The buildings
Built generously, and roofed elaborately
Ealing`s late-Victorian and Edwardian expansion produced large houses on wide roads, built for a comfortable middle class and detailed accordingly. The roofs are the clearest evidence of it: deep front gables, half-timbering, tile-hung upper storeys, decorative bargeboards and clay tiles with ornamental ridges.
That elaboration is exactly why they repay regular attention. A simple hipped roof has four junctions; an Ealing gabled house can have a dozen — valleys either side of the gable, abutments to the tile hanging, small roofs over bays and porches, and lead at every one of them. When these roofs fail, they fail at those points rather than in the open slope. Not every Ealing roof is an elaborate one, though. There is plenty of simpler housing across W5 and W13, and plenty of straightforward work — repairs, re-tiling, guttering and general maintenance on all of it.
- Ornamental ridges and tiles matched
- Valleys re-lined in lead
- Tile hanging and gable detail made good
- Decorative timber protected during works
What goes wrong here
Where Edwardian detail lets go
Elaborate roofs give you more to admire and considerably more to maintain.
Gable valleys
Valleys either side of a projecting front gable, carrying a large volume of water through a narrow channel.
Tile hanging
Vertical tile hanging to upper storeys and gables, where fixings have failed and tiles have begun to slip.
Ornamental ridges
Decorative ridge tiles bedded in mortar that has cracked out, leaving them loose on an exposed line.
Concealed gutters
Gutters running behind decorative bargeboards and eaves detail, hard to inspect and rarely cleared.
Bay and oriel roofs
Small lead-covered roofs over bays and oriels, generally the oldest covering left on the building.
Mortar instead of lead
Abutments and valleys repaired at some point with mortar or sealant where lead was the correct answer.
Working in Ealing
Wide roads, complicated roofs
Access here is usually good, so the work can focus on the roof itself.
- Front gardens and driveways easing scaffold placement
- Wide roads for delivery and material handling
- Conservation area designations across parts of the Edwardian stock
- Steep and complex roof geometry requiring full scaffold
- Original clay tiles and ornamental ridges needing matching
- Decorative timber and tile hanging requiring careful access
- Large houses often converted into flats with shared roofs
On a gabled Ealing roof the valleys are almost always the first thing to look at. We photograph each one during the survey so you can see their condition rather than take our word for it.

Customer reviews
What our customers actually say
Every review below was left by a real customer on one of our public profiles. Nothing has been edited.
My roof had various areas needing repair and adjustments to fascia, guttering and gable end to avoid future leaks. I found Patrick and his team to be capable, professional and knowledgeable. Always easy to reach by phone, message and email, they turned up when they said they would and finished the job to my satisfaction. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a good job.
Excellent experience with Patrick and his team from Invigorate Roofing. Patrick arrived on time, identified all the issues, offered a very fair and reasonable price, and completed the job quickly and professionally. His workmanship was great, and everything was done without delays. His team was polite, respectful, and very friendly throughout the whole process. I highly recommend them for any roofing work or repairs.
Patrick was very helpful indeed — he diagnosed the issue we have had with a persistently leaking roof and suggested the solution. He was really good at explaining what the issue was likely to be, and when he and his team opened up the tiling, he was able to fix it. Professional, good with communication, completed the work in one day and went back to check it had all settled in. Would highly recommend him.
The team at Invigorate Roofing did an incredible job. The price was great, the work they did was to a high standard, and they tidied up before they left — incredibly professional all round.
Patrick and his team at Invigorate Roofing were fantastic! They worked on our property over two full days repairing multiple leaks. Their professionalism from start to finish was 1st class with regular updates and images through keeping us in the loop. I would highly recommend Invigorate Roofing! Five stars!
Out of 3 quotes, Invigorate was by far the most competitive and the most transparent. Patrick carried out the job swiftly and thoroughly (and spotlessly). I would thoroughly recommend using Patrick.

Ealing FAQs
Roofing in Ealing, answered
Questions we get asked about working on W5, W13 properties. If yours is not here, just ask.
Can you match ornamental ridge tiles and clay tiles?
In most cases. The tile types used across Ealing are well documented and both reclaimed and modern equivalents exist for the common patterns. For ornamental ridges we will show you the proposed match before ordering.
The tile hanging on my gable is slipping. Is that a big job?
Not necessarily. Tile hanging can often be re-fixed in sections where the battens behind it are sound. Where the battens have gone, that section needs stripping and re-battening, which is more involved but still localised.
Why do the valleys leak when the rest of the roof is fine?
Because a valley carries the water from two slopes and does it through a narrow channel with a joint down the middle. It sees several times the volume of any other part of the roof, so it wears out first — particularly where the original lining was laid in over-long lengths.
Is my Ealing house in a conservation area?
Possibly — designations apply across parts of the Edwardian stock. Ealing Council can confirm the position for your specific address. A designation does not prevent repair; it affects what is permitted, and we work to whatever is approved.
